A different way in
The 7-Stage Journey is organised around where you are, diagnosis, planning, care homes, and so on. But sometimes what you need isn’t about a stage at all, it’s about how you’re feeling right now. These five things are what carers consistently say they need most, drawn from NHS England’s own Commitment to Carers research. Pick whichever fits today.
Below each one, we’ve been honest about what The Care Compass can actually do directly, and where we can only point you somewhere better. That honesty matters more to us than looking like we do everything.
The single thing carers say they need most, a proper, regular break. It’s often the last thing people ask for, and the first thing worth asking about.
What we do: explain the system honestly and completely. What we can’t do: provide respite ourselves, that has to come from your council or a carers’ charity.
Benefits, allowances, and the maze of what the person you care for is actually entitled to, and what you are, too.
What we do: plain-English breakdowns of the real entitlements and how to claim them. What we can’t do: assess your specific case or hand out money, that’s the DWP and your council.
Caring so often happens quietly, unnoticed by anyone outside the family. Being genuinely seen isn’t a small thing.
What we do: this is one we can actually deliver directly, not just explain. Recognition and thanks, made real.
Clear, honest guidance for the hundred small and large decisions caring involves. This is the heart of what The Care Compass exists to do.
What we do: everything here, in full. Over 100 guides, all sourced, all plain English. What we can’t do: replace a doctor, solicitor, or social worker for your specific situation.
Guilt, exhaustion, isolation, the parts of caring that aren’t practical at all, but are just as real.
What we do: a quiet space and honest words, plus real guides on what you’re likely feeling. What we can’t do: replace a counsellor or a helpline if things are genuinely hard right now.

These five needs come from NHS England’s own “What Carers Want” engagement research, the largest listening exercise of its kind, echoed independently by Carers UK, Carers Trust and Healthwatch. We didn’t invent them, we organised our site around what carers themselves said mattered.
