How we check our guidance

The Care Compass is written from lived experience of caring for both my parents. Lived experience tells you what it feels like. It doesn’t tell you the current rules. So every fact is checked before it goes live.

In short

  • Every fact is checked against an official or trusted source.
  • Medical, legal and money pages get extra safety and accuracy checks.
  • Urgent advice, like when to call 999, is always shown clearly, never tucked away.
  • No adverts, no referral fees, and nobody pays to influence what we say.
  • If something looks wrong, tell us and we’ll fix it.

Where our information comes from

Facts on The Care Compass are checked against named, authoritative sources, including the NHS, GOV.UK and NICE, the Office of the Public Guardian, the care regulators in all four UK nations, and national charities such as Alzheimer’s Society, Age UK, Dementia UK, Marie Curie and Carers UK.

How each guide is checked

  1. Written in plain English, from real experience of what families go through.
  2. Every fact checked against an original source, such as an NHS or GOV.UK page, not a summary of one.
  3. Extra checks for high-risk pages. Guides about health, the law and money get a second review focused on accuracy and safety before they go live, and again when rules change.
  4. Safety first. Urgent advice (999, NHS 111, safeguarding) is always visible, and it’s never hidden behind “Read more”.
  5. All four UK nations. Where rules differ in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, we say so clearly.

Keeping it up to date

Every guide shows the date it was last updated. We review guides when rules change, for example when benefit rates, care funding limits or legal processes change, and we review health, legal and money guides every six months.

How we use digital tools

We use digital tools, including AI, to help research, draft and cross-check our guides. Nothing goes live until it has been checked against the original sources and approved by me.

What we are, and what we aren’t

The Care Compass gives general information and practical guidance. It isn’t medical, legal or financial advice, and I’m not a doctor, solicitor or financial adviser. Our guidance sits alongside advice from your GP, care team, social worker or hospice, never in place of it. Where you need professional advice, we’ll say so. Read our full disclaimer →

Staying independent

  • The guidance on this site is free, and will stay free.
  • We don’t take referral fees, run adverts, or accept payment to recommend anyone.
  • The optional Family Shop and our work with care organisations help keep The Care Compass independent.
  • When a care home shares our guidance under its own name, it isn’t an endorsement, and they can’t change what we say.

Spotted something wrong?

Please tell us. We’d far rather hear it from you than leave it wrong. Email info@thecarecompass.uk or use our contact form, and include the page and what looks wrong. We read every message, and every “Was this guide helpful?” response too.
